Why a Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer Starts Dry and Never Fills
No water in a DishDrawer is often a closed valve, kinked inlet, or inlet valve fault—here is how to separate those causes.
When a DishDrawer runs through a “wash” that leaves dishes untouched and the sump dry, the machine never received water—or it rejected the fill almost immediately.
Owners sometimes assume detergent or cycle choice is to blame. On Fisher & Paykel drawers, the water path and flood logic come first.
Confirm Household Water Actually Reaches the Drawer
Open the under-sink stopcock fully. Feel whether the inlet hose is kinked where the cabinet slides. If another cold-water appliance on the same branch works, the street supply is probably fine and the issue is local to the DishDrawer.
Flood Protection Can Block a New Fill
If the base tray or float detected moisture earlier, some models refuse to open the inlet valve again. Dry the base, clear the earlier drain issue, then try one short cycle.
- Stopcock closed after a remodel.
- Inlet hose pinched by a slide-out drawer base.
- Screen at the inlet connection clogged with scale.
- Prior leak still holding the float up.
Listening for the Inlet Valve
At the start of a fill, you should hear a brief solenoid click and water rush. Silence with a dry sump suggests no valve open. A click with no water suggests a blocked screen or failed valve body.
What Belongs on a Service Call
Inlet valves, flow meters, and wiring to the drawer control are not DIY electrical work. If supply is confirmed and the drawer still stays dry, stop cycling it empty.
Safety note: Do not cut or splice inlet hoses under pressure. Shut water off before any hose work and keep power off if you must access the rear connections.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can hard water stop a DishDrawer from filling?
Scale can restrict inlet screens over time, but a sudden no-fill event is more often a valve position or flood lockout.
Why does only the top drawer fail to fill?
Each drawer has its own fill path. A single failed inlet valve or drawer-specific fault light is common.
Should I run rinse aid while diagnosing fill?
No. Without water, additives do nothing. Restore fill first.
